Sunglasses FAQs

Sunglasses don’t simply make a fashion statement, they also offer necessary protection for your eyes. Along with that, sunglasses block UV rays from the sun that can cause damage and vision loss. At A B Vision Eyecare in Kingston, Jamaica, we offer a variety of sunglasses that are designed to preserve your eyesight and match your style.

Why do I need sunglasses?

Sunlight contains harmful UV rays that can damage your eyes. Overexposure to UV radiation can increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and dry eye, which can lead to vision loss. Our ophthalmologist can provide an eye exam to learn more about your vision and recommend the right type of sunglasses.

Do I need sunglasses only for summer?

Sunglasses should be worn year-round when you’re out in the sun. If you work outdoors, make sure you have quality sunglasses to protect your eyes. Along with that, be sure to wear sunglasses when walking your dog, riding your bike, hiking, boating or doing any recreational activity outdoors.

What items should I consider when purchasing sunglasses?

Sunglasses are designed to protect your eyes.  For optimal protection, look for sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. At A B Vision Eyecare, we carry a wide selection of name-brand sunglasses that can help preserve your vision. Our eye doctor can help you select ones that are stylish, comfortable, and will keep your eyes safe.

Should I choose sunglasses with dark lenses?

When it comes to UV protection, the color of the lens isn’t as important as the protection the lenses provide. The best protection comes from sunglasses that offer 100% full-spectrum UV protection, regardless of the lens color.

What are the benefits of polarized glasses?

Polarized lenses filter light to reduce glare reflected from horizontal surfaces like water, car windshields, and roads. They also increase contrast and make colors appear brighter. However, these glasses don’t offer UV protection for your eyes.

What type of sunglasses should I choose if I wear prescription glasses?

Our ophthalmologist may recommend photochromic lenses with UV protection for your prescription eyewear. These lenses automatically darken in the sun, which means they can be used as sunglasses. However, you can purchase separate prescription sunglasses in addition to your current vision correction or choose magnetic clip-on lenses that attach to your prescription eyeglasses.
