Dry Eye FAQ

Dry eyes occur when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate faster than they can be made. Many experience dry eyes associated with allergies, medical conditions, prescription medications, and during drier months of the year. Those who suffer from dry eye syndrome should speak with an ophthalmology specialist to learn more about the condition and treat it. The dedicated vision care staff at A B Vision Jamaica in Kingston and Linstead can help diagnose your dry eye condition and provide methods to help treat it, providing you with optimal comfort.

Who is at Risk for Dry Eye?

Anyone can develop dry eye syndrome; however, some are more likely to develop this condition than others. Those who are at a higher risk of developing dry eye include:

  • People over the age of 50
  • Those with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, vitamin A deficiency, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma
  • Those taking certain medications, such as birth control, antidepressants, high blood pressure, decongestants, acne medication, and hormone replacement therapy
  • Those who had received laser eye surgery could be at risk for temporary dry eyes
  • Those who have had damage to their tear glands from radiation or inflammation

What are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

There are several causes of dry eye, and for most, the symptoms can affect their vision and be very uncomfortable. Here are some of the most common symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome:

  • Feeling like something is stuck in the eye
  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Water eyes caused by irritation
  • Stringy mucus in the eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Eye fatigue

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed?

A doctor of ophthalmology can diagnose dry eye syndrome during a routine exam. During the exam, discuss the symptoms you are experiencing with the eye doctor. The eye doctor may conduct a Schirmer test to determine if your eyes produce the appropriate amount of tears. If diagnosed with dry eye, the doctor will suggest a treatment plan to help provide you with relief.

How is Dry Eye Treated?

Several treatments help relieve dry eye, including over-the-counter artificial tears and ointments, tear stimulating medications, and eye inserts. All treatment methods provide the eyes with moisture and help stimulate the tear ducts to produce more tears.
